Material and Color: The Nyanga stone used here is exceptionally vibrant, featuring a dramatic marbled pattern of deep forest green, charcoal, and pale sage. The artist has achieved a glass-like polish on the primary surfaces, which allows the intricate, web-like veining of the stone to become a central visual element.
• Form and Texture: The sculpture focuses on the soft, rounded contours of a torso. The "eternal" quality is captured in the seamless transition between the different planes of the body. In a signature Mashaya move, the polished, sophisticated "inner" beauty of the stone is framed by the raw, unworked ochre-colored crust at the base and the top "shoulder" area, creating a dialogue between the earth’s rough exterior and its refined interior.
Inspiration
Timelessness: The title "Eternal Beauty" suggests that true beauty is not subject to the passage of time. By rendering the female form in solid, ancient stone, Mashaya makes the fleeting grace of life permanent. It reflects the idea that the "essence" of beauty is a constant, ancestral force.
• The Stone as a Living Entity: Mashaya often speaks of the stone having its own spirit. In this piece, the inspiration comes from the stone’s own patterns—the way the green veins flow like lifeblood or muscle fibers. He follows these natural lines to reveal a form that feels as though it was always meant to be there, waiting to be "released."
