Ken White
Framed: 59.25 x 70.5 cm.; 23½ x 27¾ in.
Olympic Studios is White's 1988 design for a mural scheme at the celebrated recording studios in Barnes, London. He conceives it as simulated fragments of ancient Greek pottery, the upper band in the red-figure manner and the lower in glossy black-figure, their chipped edges and painted cracks lending the illusion of excavated antiquities. The athletes boxing, throwing the discus and crowning the victor turn the studio's name into the ancient Olympic games, a characteristically witty conceit from London's foremost muralist at the height of his career.
