Led by the Heart is an early Pop work by Ken White, almost certainly an editorial illustration from the late 1960s or early 1970s, when White was working as a graphic designer for London's music and arts magazines, including the underground title Oz. A suited businessman is given an anatomical heart in place of a head, his tweed rendered in fine hand-drawn hatching that mimics mechanical halftone, the whole literalising the idiom set in Pop lettering across the top. The substitution device owes much to Magritte, the cool graphic assembly to Richard Hamilton, and the satirical wit to Peter Blake and the underground press. Designed to be read briefly and integrating its own typography, it evokes a magazine cover or frontispiece from White's early years as a commercial illustrator, before his murals made his name.
