Hill Head is a favourite painting spot that I visit in all weathers. This painting depicts an occasion when the weather was too inclement for me to paint on the spot. Instead, I sat for a long while in the car, watching the waves breaking. I took videos and made pencil studies of the shapes they made as they hit the beach. Back in the studio, those shapes and the interesting sea greys were still fresh in my mind. To best capture the scene, I elected to use a red gouache ground and to paint onto it with watercolour and gouache.

I lead watercolour painting classes and used this painting and technique as a lesson with members.
