The painting depicts a serene pastoral scene. In the foreground, there is a large, gnarled tree with sparse leaves, standing prominently on the left side of the composition. The tree’s twisted branches and trunk suggest age and resilience. Beneath and around the tree, a flock of sheep grazes peacefully in the sun, adding to the tranquil rural atmosphere.

To the right of the tree and amongst the sheep, there appears to be a shearing stool used for handling the sheep. This piece of equipment, though small in size, draws attention due to its purpose in the pastoral setting.

The landscape behind the tree and sheep is expansive, featuring wide, open fields that stretch into the horizon. The background is composed of soft, rolling hills or distant fields, under a sky filled with light, diffused clouds. The overall colour palette is soft and muted, dominated by earthy tones of greens, browns, and soft blues, which are characteristic of Frazer's work in capturing the calm, bucolic essence of the Scottish or English countryside.

The brushwork appears to be loose and impressionistic, with soft edges and an emphasis on capturing the atmosphere rather than fine details. This technique effectively conveys the peaceful, almost idyllic nature of rural life.

The painting by William Miller Frazer is a fine example of pastoral landscape art, emphasising the harmony between nature and rural life through its depiction of a simple, yet beautiful scene of sheep grazing under an old tree.
