‘Withstanding’ is slab built by hand in a stoneware clay, with intuitively formed markings using natural found objects. The circular piercings represent both a focused viewpoint, and finding a way through, both physically and metaphorically, through the seascape, and the darkness within, and what might be on the other side. This is a reference both to human mental health struggles, and the force of the sea, both equally strong. ‘Withstanding’ is hand painted with layers of glazes, and stamped LNC with my handmade stamp.

"My work is an interplay between my formal architectural training and my affection for land and particularly seascapes, especially those of West Cornwall. I am drawn to both geometry and order, and organic patterns found in nature, and their ever-changing interplay with the elements and natural light. I forage for beach found natural items to use in my work to create textured surfaces, marking lines and patterns onto raw clay, both intuitively and to represent sketches I have done outside." 

"I am drawn to forming circles, often pierced, and hand paint all glazes in layers to capture the fluidity of my thinking at that moment in time and to reflect differing light conditions in the sea and on land. I’ve exhibited at ACEArts and the Bath Society of Artists and work out of my home studio in Bath."
