Material Drawing focuses on Wortman’s experiences of the landscape – real and imagined – utilising charcoal, pastel, slate and paper. Encountering these works, their materiality comes to the fore, Wortman relishing and revealing the properties of her medium through pronounced mark-making.
In 15 evocatively tangible works, Wortman portrays fleeting moments within nature: hints of earth, light, space, water - experiences felt and captured before dissipating again.
A walk through Wortman's exhibition is to walk through the landscape, feel its encompassing embrace but to never fully grasp it; yet the impression endures.
Working at the intersection of the haptic and the optic, Wortman seeks to escape the boundaries of medium, and presents the audience with realms of otherness. Exploring the materiality of the possible, rather than creating heavy matter, she manifests liminal spaces that quiver on the edge of their own disappearance.
