Akhenaten and the Aten depicts the heretic pharaoh in the unmistakable Amarna manner, with an elongated skull, long jaw, slanted eye and soft, androgynous body, all drawn from the distinctive style of his reign. The figure raises a vessel towards the rays of the Aten, the sun-disc whose beams end in tiny hands offering the ankh of life, with scarab, sacred ibis and rippling water glyphs completing a knowing assembly of Egyptian iconography. Loose, warm and fluent, it confirms White’s fascination with Akhenaten.
