One of Britain's leading sculptors of the post-War period, the present work is a distinctively Armitage drawing relating to his bronzes of the 1950s. It dates to 1952, a critical year for the artist in which he had had his first one-man show at Gimpel Fils, London and exhibited at the Venice Biennale, following which he rose to international prominence. Armitage was a visiting professor at the University of Caracas, Venezuela and Boston University, USA and was a visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art. In 1969, he was awarded a CBE and in 1995 was elected a Royal Academician. His work is included in the collection of the British Council, Tate, The National Galleries of Scotland, the Royal Academy of Arts and Yale Center for British Art.
