Hector McDonnell: Istanbul's Light

Following McDonnell's successful solo show at Gallery Eight in September, the exhibition has been extended  to The Little Gallery. Come and explore a collection of works that chart McDonnell's enduring fascination with light and memory, through scenes of Istanbul and London.

Biography

Painter, etcher and draughtsman in pencil and ink, born in Belfast. The Hon. Hector McDonnell’s mother was the painter Angela Countess of Antrim. After education at Eton College and Oxford University, McDonnell studied painting in Munich and sculpting in Vienna, 1964–5.

 He showed at Hamet Gallery in 1972, thereafter in London at Fischer Fine Art, but also extensively overseas. Had a retrospective in Darmstadt in 1981. Among later exhibitions was a series at Pyms Gallery from 1997 and New Paintings from Tibet at Berkeley Square Gallery, 2003. Depictions of Ulster shops were a feature of McDonnell’s work, a notable example of this style being Billingsgate Market in the Fishmongers’ Hall, London. Belfast Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of Art in Darmstadt hold his work.
