Hector McDonnell

Born in Belfast, Hector McDonnell grew up on his family’s historic estate at Glenarm Castle, County Antrim. Raised in a highly creative environment—his mother was the accomplished sculptor and cartoonist Angela Countess of Antrim—he pursued classical art studies in Munich and Vienna, where he trained under the prominent Secessionist sculptor Fritz Wotruba. He later read modern history at Christ Church, Oxford, while continuing to hone his skills in figure drawing.

McDonnell’s work finds remarkable resonance in the familiar, transforming mundane spaces, old Ulster shops, and international landscapes into poetic studies of light and history. His distinctive realist style has earned him widespread international acclaim, including the prestigious Darmstädter Kunstpreis in 1979. With a career that has straddled both painting and historical writing, McDonnell splits his time between Northern Ireland and New York, continuously exploring the intersection of place, light, and memory.
