A local artist who has spent the last decade painting the Ridgeway, the iconic chalk track known as Britain's oldest road.
Monaghan paints outdoors, in front of the subject, in oils and watercolours. Most pieces are completed on the spot in under an hour, working fast in changing light and weather to produce a fresh and direct impression. Some larger pieces are worked up in the studio to add a richness and complexity beyond what is possible in the field.
Recurring motifs in Monaghan's work include iconic features of the local landscape, such as the iron-age hillforts at Liddington and Barbury, the beech clumps at Hackpen Hill and the Uffington White Horse.
Monaghan's prizewinning work has been shown at exhibitions in Bath, Oxford and Swindon. He is based near Barbury Castle with his wife, two young children and two cocker spaniels.
